As should be the case, much attention has gone to the needs of orphans, the practice of adoption and the improvement of services to orphans in the last few years. An area that we hear little about is the issue of post orphanage support. Post orphanage support is about providing the tools for self sufficiency as young people leave orphanages and begin the process of adjusting to the new and often threatening world around them. This support includes vocational training, occasional housing assistance and help in how to manage households. It will often also include, financial literacy, understanding the law and principles for developing healthy relationships. The other vital factor is need for emotional and sometimes spiritual support as well as the development of effective social skills. Please go to “What you can do” to help steer a young persons life into wholeness and healthy self sufficiency.
